Filament Wound Tanks vs Contact Molded Tanks for Chemical Storage

FRP tank construction relies on two proven methods, and the difference matters when you specify a tank for corrosive storage. Filament winding and contact molding build the fibreglass wall in different ways, each with its own strengths. Two ASTM Standards Behind FRP Tank Walls

The two methods answer to two separate ASTM standards. Filament winding is built to ASTM D3299, and contact molding, also called hand lay up, is built to ASTM D4097, with both methods used on a single vessel. Whichever method forms a given part of the tank, the corrosion barrier is held to a minimum of 110 mils, above the 96 mils specified by ASTM and ASME. That shared barrier gives both construction types the same chemical defence at the inside wall.

How Filament Winding Adds Circumferential Strength

Filament winding wraps continuous glass strand around a rotating mould under controlled tension. This builds a structural layer of 60 to 70 percent continuous strand glass, laid in the hoop direction around the cylinder. The result is high circumferential strength, exactly what a tall tank needs to resist the outward hydrostatic pressure of a full load. Winding also gives precise, repeatable control over wall thickness along the sidewall, so the structural layer is consistent from top to bottom.

Where Contact Molding Suits Complex Shapes and Bottoms

Contact molding places alternating layers of chopped glass and woven roving by hand. It suits the parts of a tank that a winding machine cannot form cleanly. It builds the bottoms, heads, and other shaped sections, and forms the 90-degree open-top rims by hand lay-up on a platen table. The unitized one-piece bottom-to-sidewall construction, built without a seam at the corner, relies on this shaping freedom. Where geometry is complex, hand lay-up delivers strength that follows the shape.

Comparing Wall Strength for Pressure and Load

The two methods carry load in complementary ways. Filament winding excels at hoop strength on the straight cylindrical sidewall, where hydrostatic pressure is highest. Contact molding delivers conformable strength on curved and jointed sections, where the load path bends around a shape. A knuckle radius at the flat or sloped bottom corner adds hydrostatic resistance, and the seam-free bottom-to-sidewall joint removes a weak point that separate parts would introduce. Reading a specification, look for each method used where its strength applies.

Matching Each Method to Capacity Need

Capacity often decides how the methods combine. Shop-built tanks reach capacities up to 60,000 gallons. When a project needs more, field-assembled tanks take over; their sidewall sections are filament wound with circumferential joints for on-site assembly, reaching capacities up to 100,000 gallons. The bottom and top heads for those tanks are made in shippable sections using contact molding. On almost any tank, the two methods work together, winding for the sidewall and hand lay-up for the shaped ends, which is why the pairing matters more than picking a single winner.

Which Method Should You Specify?

So the choice between filament wound and contact molded is not really either or.
